Mediation and Conflict Resolution

What is Mediation and Conflict Resolution?

Mediation and conflict resolution are highly structured and focussed processes to help resolve specific disagreements and disputes. These disagreements can be related to family matters, separation and divorce issues or within a workplace.

When you feel very strongly about something and others do not agree with you or do not understand why it matters so much to you, it is very hard not to get into a conflict. And once you are in conflict, it is almost always impossible to reach an agreement or a compromise willingly. It is impossible to think rationally, to listen to or be heard by others.

At times like this there can also be a danger of using or succumbing to coercive control. Conflict is very psychologically damaging for vulnerable persons such as children, to witness or be a part of. When you seek out Mediation you are no-longer alone in trying to sort out your conflicting issues.

What happens?

The aim of Mediation and Conflict Resolution is to find a compromise that all of you can accept. The compromise may not be what you most want but you can accept it.

The process is structured. It starts by each of you being able speak uninterrupted about the conflicting issue. You will be listened to about all your concerns and wishes. It is my role, as mediator, to steer the process such that the focus remains on the issues and towards a possible resolution.

You are the experts on your own lives so you are an integral part of finding possible compromises and resolutions once you have all heard each other.

Mediation and conflict resolution work because they are an entirely voluntary process, so all of you are willing to be there and take part in trying to find a solution. It is totally confidential.

Why not therapy?

It differs from therapy, in that, whilst you will have a chance to talk about your feelings and thoughts about an issue, the aim is to reach a solution that feels good enough for you. We will not explore the feelings in the same way as therapy.
