Psychotherapy means that you benefit from the experience and training of the therapist who is alongside you, making suggestions and providing insight into what may be going on for you, providing help to challenge the obstacles that are hindering you and identify why you might be finding yourself stuck. The expertise of the psychotherapist is used to unravel what is happening, where the personal challenges are, along with the possibilities for change.
Because we treat the past as having a role in your present life/lives, you will gain an understanding of how it can still dominate your actions. This is usually experienced as hugely liberating and provides the energy to think about what kind of life you want now. It enables you to make choices.
